VOLUNTEER WITH GASTON HOPE IN CHRIST!
We have three programs: leadership and other opportunities.
Tutoring. Gaston Hope in Christ has provided Hope in Christ Tutoring since 1999. Students are either transported by bus or dropped off to work and play with our staff and volunteers in a fun, safe environment on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 until 6.
Tutoring Volunteers listen, read, and help students one-on-one or in a small group with their work. Staff provide training, leadership, and support, and you show up and love! We play active and other games, provide new experiences, challenge them to improve, and share our lives with them. One day a week, a month or more can change a life over a year.
English Hope is our ESL program, with classes Monday & Thursday from 6:30-8. Volunteers provide in-class support and tutoring for our students, another pair of eyes and ears to help them learn. Walking beside them, our volunteers help students understand what is being taught.
World Changers and World Seekers are our service and mentoring programs for 3rd-10th graders, Tuesday-Thursday each summer. We interview a community leader, serve with a nonprofit or government organization, and have experience in teamwork, leadership, and other areas to help participants grow. Volunteers are either part of an interview, part of their service projects, or help us with trips.
Board of Directors. A volunteer board of directors leads our ministry. We look for people with experience with our programs, such as participants or family members, and also for community leaders- people in our community with connections and a love for students and our programs. Board Members are asked to be people with an active faith life, connections in our community or with our programs, and a willingness to serve for up to 5 hours a month for 2 years. Gaston Hope in Christ has been the work of multiple churches, groups, and individuals. We began with 3 churches trying to reach different areas in Gaston County. Over the life of our program, we have served thousands of students & family members from 17 schools in Gaston, Mecklenburg & Lancaster (SC) counties. We have also had great partners in that time, including:
