What Is Hope in Christ?

Our mission at Gaston Hope In Christ is to Build Relationships to Enrich Lives. We help develop character, confidence, and community through relationships with students and families. We accomplish this through tutoring academically at-risk students, mentoring teen leaders, and teaching non-native English learners.

What Makes Gaston Hope in Christ So Special?

Gaston Hope in Christ is an educational nonprofit organization in Gastonia, NC. We were started by area churches and individuals in 1999 to meet the needs of our communities.  

Our main program is Hope in Christ Tutoring, which offers free tutoring after school for three days during the school year. We provide students with a caring, learning, and growing environment during this time. 

We have provided college internships and summer teen student enrichment programs to promote community awareness and service, build teamwork, and develop character and leadership skills.

2025-2026 will be our eighth year and fifth full year of English Hope, offering English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners. Our programs and efforts are free to participants, and many of our program staff are volunteers. All of our income must come from other sources. We use donations from churches, groups, and individuals, as well as fundraising and gifts from partners and others, to fulfill our mission.

A diverse local board of directors, made up of educators, friends, and program participants, governs Gaston Hope in Christ. Our programs and services are offered to all without regard for race, creed, background, or personal choices or beliefs. Participants are not required to attend church activities or have any specific faith or cultural background, beliefs, or habits to participate in our programs.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation (https://www.dgliteracy.org/) Established 30 years ago by Dollar General’s founding family, we are proud to uplift, empower and serve others through literacy.

VOLUNTEER WITH GASTON HOPE IN CHRIST!

Since 1999, the backbone of our programs has been the high school students, young adults, parents, teachers, community leaders, retirees, and others who have helped our programs succeed. People who are able to help for 2 or more hours a month can be a part of Hope in Christ. See How You Can Help!

• We always need wonderful tutors—folks who can read with students, help them with their schoolwork, play games with them, and just care for them at least once a month for 2-3 hours (3 to 6 pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays).
